I came across this amazing cartoon by Inkcinct. An apparently terrified koala is hugging the trunk of a tree in a forest of cut down trees, and a man in a suit tells a woman "This young koala has a mental health problem".
This reminded me of how a person can be treated when being subjected to exclusion. Because it is so hard to notice from the outside, the first reaction is to try to explain to the person that they overreacted, or to send them to see a psychologist to cope with *their own* feelings of the situation. When the thing causing the distress is the situation of exclusion itself, and it is what must be addressed.
Instead of pathologizing the individual, the systemic issues must be fixed.
